Our Philosophy
"There is nothing in a caterpillar that tells you it's going to be a butterfly." Buckminster Fuller
Innovation
We live in a world of rapidly emerging technologies and innovative products that enhance the performance of the structures that we build. Sustainability, efficiency, and "green" approaches are becoming more prevalent and necessary in reducing the long-term costs of maintaining and operating our houses. Yet despite the recent trend, sustainable practices have always been a part of our work. Our challenge is to incorporate these technologies into our designs so that the aesthetics and senses we seek to evoke are not compromised.
We recently completed a design in collaboration with Oceanside Builders of Bailey Island, Maine for two new shingle-style, oceanfront homes which qualify for Platinum and Gold level LEED certificates. The structures are heated and cooled exclusively by solar and geothermal sources, and have no reliance on conventional fossil fuels. Walls are constructed with insulated concrete forms, and a large portion of the electricity is provided by photovoltaic panels, with any excess capacity being sold back to the grid. Nevertheless, the house is an inspired example of traditional Maine coastal vernacular, right down to the gently curved gambrel rooflines, and it nestles very comfortably in its island setting.
