How We Started
Carpenter & MacNeille was conceived over a simple New England seafood dinner at a local restaurant in Essex, Massachusetts, in 1996. Terry Carpenter was a builder, and Rob MacNeille an architect. Our concept was straight forward: bring together our individual skills under one entity that offers clients the full service of design and construction as had been the practice several generations earlier.
The idea of Master Builder was not a new one: for centuries buildings were designed, and construction supervised, by the Master Builder. It has only been in the last century with the increase in specialization that the roles of architect, engineer, and builder evolved into distinct and separate roles. It was our belief that reuniting these roles would bring better control and streamlined costs to our projects, and the end, greater satisfaction to our clients.
Over the past 12 years, we have grown from a two-man firm operating out of the loft in Terry's barn to a team of 30 individuals of diverse backgrounds and talents. We have added an Interior Design department and acquired a cabinetry and millwork shop to further our concept of full integration in our design/build process.
Our business has grown primarily through the on going relationships and referrals we have from our clients, and we believe this is testimony in itself that our original concept of reuniting architect and builder was a good one and that it continues to be very well received.
